Start of the cycling ferry season on the Flensburg Fjord at Whitsun
Trips on the fjord between Germany and Denmark will be possible again in 2024
The 'Friends of the Bicycle Ferry' association is well prepared for the 2024 summer season with two bicycle ferries. The first departures between Langballigau and Egernsund will start at Whitsun on 18 May.
With the two ferries 'Thjalfe' and 'Rødsand', the 'Friends of the Bicycle Ferry' association is well prepared for the start of the season. After a record 7,000 passengers from around 40 countries last year, the association is also hoping for a lively response and summery weather for the 2024 season. "Interested passengers can already book their tour via our website and secure their tickets early, for example with the 'Thjalfe' from Langballigau on the German side via Brunsnæs, Marina Minde to Egernsund. Our second bicycle ferry 'Rødsand' will again be used for the route along the former 'Butterfahrten' from Egernsund with stops in Sønderhav and on to Flensburg and back," says captain and ship owner Palle Heinrich. Both bicycle ferries are authorised to carry 12 passengers and 12 bicycles. Depending on the weather, the journey can be spent inside the ferries or in the fresh sea air on deck. There is plenty of space for passengers and their bicycles and the beautiful landscape of the Fjord can be enjoyed during the crossing.
The trips start at Whitsun on 18 to 20 May and the following weekend, 25 to 26 May. The regular ferry service with daily departures between Langballigau and Egernsund starts on 1 June. Online bookings can be made on the German and Danish-language website: https://cykelfaergen.info/ or via Facebook https://www.facebook.com/cykelfargen/get_app

The special tour between Egernsund and Flensburg
"Following the great popularity of our trips between Egernsund on the Danish side and Flensburg, we are responding to the wishes of tourists and locals who have requested a service on this beautiful ferry route for the 2024 season," explains Gerhard Jacobsen, Chairman of the Friends of the Bicycle Ferry Association. The trips along the traditional Butterfahrten route, which used to be called 'Æ spritte' in the southern Danish region, are an attractive addition to the connection to Langballigau. The bicycle ferry 'Rødsand' will call at Flensburg on both Fridays and Saturdays in the 2024 season, departing from Egernsund. The first trip starts on 28 June.
Consequential damage from last year's storm surge is being repaired
As a result of the storm and Baltic Sea flooding last autumn, there was also considerable damage to almost all of the bicycle ferry's moorings. Extensive repair and renovation work was started quickly and will be completed by the start of the cycle ferry season. "We are delighted that the renovation of the berth in Sønderhav was started so quickly and that we have already been promised a suitable berth in Flensburg. The repairs and renovation of the moorings in Brunsnæs and Langballigau are also well underway. The co-operation between our association and public and private stakeholders on both sides of the border is excellent," explains Gerhard Jacobsen. For the landing stage in Brunsnæs, the 'Friends of the Bicycle Ferry' association has concluded a 10-year usage agreement with the owner and has also agreed to organise and finance the necessary renovation work. The local population and other partners along the Flensburg Fjord were involved in the project. Once completed, the jetty will also have a bathing staircase, making it a new centre of attraction for bathers. In total, the association estimates the costs at DKK 512,000 (approx. EUR 69,000). Even though the majority of the funding is now available thanks to support from the municipality of Sonderburg, local sponsors and funding from the LAG pool, Gerhard Jacobsen is still hoping for further sponsorship from German and Danish sponsors. After all, the funding gap of DKK 200,000 (approx. EUR 29,000) needs to be closed as soon as possible.
Commitment to the bicycle ferry is fun - more volunteers needed
The 'Friends of the Bicycle Ferry' association is still looking for more volunteers who would like to get involved on board or ashore to look after the guests, give them suggestions for tourist attractions in the area and take on smaller tasks. "We speak Danish and German with each other and are looking for interested people from both sides of the Flensburg Fjord who would like to help us with accompanying passengers and other tasks. We are happy to invite interested parties to join us on one of our tours with the 'Thjalfe'," says Gerhard Jacobsen.
